Closed Captioning Careers

Court reporting is not the only way you can put the stenography training program at Stenotype Institute to work for you. Your training can also prepare you to enter the closed captioning field. With a closed captioning career, you can sleep easy knowing there will always be a need to assist the community with your ability to transcribe audio for the deaf or hearing impaired. Note that some captioning companies require job applicants to obtain additional (specialized) captioning training or have 2-3 years' court reporting experience. But having the fundamental stenography skills in place will push you ahead of the competition and ready you for any additional specialized training you may need.

The Job Outlook for Closed Captioning Specialists

According to the U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), employment of court reporters and closed captioning specialists was expected to grow by 18% between 2008 and 2018. The BLS, in their 2010-2011 occupational handbook, went on to say "court reporters with certification and those who choose to specialize in providing CART, broadcast captioning, or webcasting services should have the best job opportunities".

It's not hard to see why the BLS is "bullish" on the future outlook for stenography careers. There are a myriad of ways that closed captioners and general stenographers can make use of their skills in this field.

Live Television Broadcasts: Many of the broadcasts we view on television are delivered live, and they are all required to be offered with closed captioning for the hearing impaired. Nationwide, there are literally thousands of such broadcasts every day, such as:

Recorded TV Broadcasts: While the amount of daily live television broadcasts is staggering, it pales in comparison to the amount of recorded television that is re-broadcast at a later time. This includes all the TV broadcasts you see that are not live -- from daily talk shows to sitcoms to movies. All of it has to be transcribed, and the skills of a closed captioning specialist are needed to get it done.

New Frontiers: The information age has opened up all kinds of other stenography jobs for those with the skills and certification. There is CART (Communication Access Real-time Translation) -- providing transcripts for colleges and universities, Web Casting, subtitling for movie theatres, YouTube videos, the list goes on. In addition, many of today's closed captioning jobs offer the ability to work at home.
